A rare piece of American military and fraternal history, this original Old Guard State Fencibles medal dates to the late 19th or early 20th century. The Philadelphia-based militia was a functional military unit from 1813 until about 1900, embodying their own motto of being "soldiers for war as well as for peace." This highly collectible item features the classic Anglo-Norman motto "Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense" ("Shame on him who thinks evil of it") surrounding a detailed relief of St. George slaying the dragon with striking blue enamel accents. The top bar is clearly marked "MEMBER" in relief, and the item is made of attractive gold-tone metal. It is in excellent antique condition, showing a lovely, aged patina consistent with its history, with no breaks, damage, or repairs and intact enamel. Ideal for collectors of militaria, military history, fraternal order items, or unique vintage pins.
