This is a U.S. Navy chambray shirt from the 1940s (wartime period). The size is a rare 16, a large size.
It has gussets.
I acquired it as deadstock in the U.S. about 20 years ago and wore it about three times before storing it. It has been cleaned before the photoshoot. While you often see faded and worn-out 40's chambray shirts in the used market, this condition, with its deep color and firm fabric, is quite rare.
There is some fraying because the fabric on the left side wasn't properly tucked in and sewn when it was assembled (see image 7).
Although recent reproductions are excellent, the texture of the actual fabric with its uneven weave and slubs, and the feel of the buttons, cannot be matched.
