Satsuma ware originated in the Satsuma province of Japan during the Edo period (1603-1868). It is known for its finely crackled glaze and detailed, colorful overglaze enamels, often featuring scenes of Japanese life, landscapes, and mythological figures.

During the Meiji era (1868-1912), Satsuma ware became a popular export item, and many pieces were made specifically for the Western market. These export pieces often incorporated Western motifs and designs, while still maintaining the traditional Satsuma aesthetic. The cobalt blue and gold color scheme is a common variation.

A few very small/minor paint chips as seen in photos, but the item is 110 years old.
